Last year I went on Mala Učka and rode with Ivan, Gojsi and Hrvoje. We chose one of the easier descents that Učka mountain has to offer. This time I came back with friends. We were accompanied with crew (Matko, Dule and Luka) from Rijeka who shuttled to Poklon. We started from Ika (There is a parking lot behind Konzum market) and from there went uphill on paved road. I was relieved that we pedaled to Vojak by asphalt road because I haven’t rode bike for 3 weeks, and one week had a flu, so I lost my form. This lost of form cost me later very dear on long descent.
On the ascent there are few spots with views on coast. You can see Rijeka, Cres and Krk. It took us from Ika to Vojak about three and a half hours with easy going pace. On the ascent there are no wells, but you can take some refill in restaurant near mountain hut Poklon (It is on about 2/3 of ascent). From there we continued together with Rijeka crew to Vojak.
Peak Vojak (1396 m) has nice opened views in all directions. We were lucky to be here on suuny day with clear sky, so we could enjoy our lunch looking on Istria, Alps in Slovenia and Croatian islands at the same time.
Descent starts from the top of Vojak. From there we went back with the same road we went uphill. After about 1 km we turned right on gravel road that leads to nice sightseeing spot below peak.
From here starts fun. We followed trail that goes below Vojak on Istria side and leads to Mala Učka. Onward trail switches from fast and flow sections to steep and rocky sections with switchbacks. It mosty goes through forest, but when it goes over ridges you can enjoy in magnificent views. Be sure to take enough water with you because descent is very long and tiring.
