Ratitovec is a mountain ridge in the Julian Alps in Slovenia. The Krek Lodge (Krekova koča) stands on the ridge it is located below Gladki vrh.  Krekova Koča is our final destination and from there starts our descent. From the cottage there is a beautiful view of the Škofjeloška and Cerkljan hills. In the distance we also see the Julian Alps, Karavanke and the Kamniška and Savinjska Alps. There is also a winter bivouac a few meters behind the cottage. The cottage is open permanently in the summer season, otherwise on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, if the weather is nice. This is good to know because you don’t have to carry a lots of water or food, all of the above you can find there.

Ascent starts from Železniki and is mostly on paved road and it is one of easiests ascents for this kind of routes. After some time we connected to gravel road and from there to singletrack which lead through pastures filled with cows and bulls. They all gave us a look, but luckily they didn’t interfere in our business. After some time starts very short section of pushing our bikes to cottage with very good view on surroundings.

After short refreshment (it was a little bit chilly) we decided to start our descent and chose trail that leads to Prtovč which meant that we will have another 2 km of very steep ascent on gravel road which we mostly pushed our bikes because this road is very very steep. First descent is very technical, steep with though sections, tight corners and drops with lots of stones placed on the most unwanted places, but also all these details make this trail one of the best technical trails I rode. I would say that this is very well balanced trail.

After steep ascent we reached another ridge and from there we rode a different kind of trail. This path is also very steep, but unlike first descent this had less stones and more ground. This trail is also technical, but not as technical demanding as previous one. After reaching Zali Log we found another path that goes parallel with the paved road. Ending of this path that goes by some  little sanctuary has hidden gem in the shape of tight switchbacks which are perfect ending of this amazing route which gave us more than we hoped for.
