Velika Planina is probably one of the top 5 rides of 2019. and it is the site of few European surviving high mountain herdsmen’s villages where traditional Alpines culture still lives. Its scenic  high plateau is famous for its beauty and landscape. During all year, Velika Planina is accesible by aerial cable car, the bottom cable car station is located in Kamniška Bistrica, next to the Kamp Alpe campsite (here we parked our car, plenty of parking space, and from here we started our route). It took less than 10 minutes to reach upper station in Velika Planina’s Šimnovec area.

If I remember correctly cable car transport costed 13 Euros (11 Euros for person + 2 Euros for bike). From the  upper station we cycled for about 40 minutes to the top and then started descend to Krivčevo.  This route is great because it has one uphill and two downhill parts. Descent to Krivčevo is easier than the second one, and is mainly hiking trail, so you should be very careful because it is popular hiking path to Velika Planina pasture.

At the beginning, uphill was on paved road, then after few km transforms into macadam, which becomes very steep while reaching the top. At this time I started to feel fatigue due to flue and high temperature that started giving me a kick. I managed to complete the route without any big problems, but had a hard time keeping pace with Ivan.

After reaching the top (for second time) we explored eastern part of pasture, enjoyed the views on meadows, cows and surrounding mountains. Along the macadam road every now and then we passed beside little ponds which cattle uses for drink. After a little break in local hut we started another descent that led us toward our parking spot. Second trail down Dolski Greben into the valley is technical demanding trail with switchbacks, roots, rocks and leafs that made it even more difficult.

If you want to avoid hikers and many people, you should consider going on this route during workdays or during late fall.
